This version pairs the full online course with a live, instructor-led tasting session on Zoom, so you can put what you learn into practice.

This is not just theory. You will learn how to think about wine including how climate, grape variety, and winemaking decisions come together to shape what you taste in the glass. Each lesson is structured to build knowledge step by step, so that by the end of the course wine feels intuitive and understandable.

Course Structure

  • What Is Wine? – what wine is, and the factors that shape style: grape, climate, terroir, geography, weather
  • Climate & Geography – climate versus weather, cool / moderate / hot climate zones, weather hazards, and vintage
  • Grape Varieties – why grapes matter, five key white grapes, four key black grapes
  • Wine Styles – white versus red versus rosé, visual comparison, key regions overview
  • Harvesting – Northern versus Southern Hemisphere, hand versus machine, pros and cons
  • Winemaking Process – step by step, white versus red versus rosé, pressing and fermentation
  • Vessels – stainless steel versus oak, French versus American oak
  • Advanced Winemaking Techniques – lees ageing, malolactic fermentation, blending

Each module includes a knowledge check, and the course finishes with a 75-question final exam.

Live Guided Tasting Experience (Live Zoom Session)

Bring the course content to life with a live, instructor-led tasting session designed to build real, hands-on confidence with what you’ve learnt.

What is included

  • One 2-hour interactive tasting session on Zoom
  • Guided online tasting and Q&A with a TSWS educator
  • A structured, professional approach to tasting, evaluating, and describing wine

How it works

  • Book one session within 3 months of enrolling
  • Sessions take place on the first Monday evening of each month, with dates set and provided by the school
  • Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended
  • If you do not book your session within the 3-month period, the tasting experience is no longer available and the fee is forfeited

Wine selection

Students are responsible for purchasing the recommended wines in advance. No alcohol is provided, sold, or shipped as part of this course. The virtual tasting will include:

Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon

You may follow along with the recommended wines or use similar styles. Tasting participation is optional.

Fees & Booking

  • Cost: $159 plus HST (online course $79 + live tasting session $80)
  • One year of access to the full course content, at your own pace
  • One 2-hour live tasting session, to be booked within 3 months of enrolling
  • Refund Policy: the course and tasting session fees are non-refundable. If the tasting session is not booked within the 3-month window, the session fee is forfeited.
